Paddle Care

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR NORTHPOINT PADDLE

One of our goals is to make your paddle easy to maintain. Your NorthPoint Paddle comes to you with a finish consisting of one coat of high-grade water sealer, followed by five coats of a hand-rubbed high-grade teak oil. Both the high-grade water sealer and teak oil are meant for marine application.

General maintenance can be done as often as needed, applying as many coats of teak oil as you would like to restore the finish to the preferred sheen. It can be done once or twice a year, or more often, depending on the wear. (See General Maintenance Instructions below)

PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to re-apply water sealer for general maintenance – that would only be necessary if you have to perform extensive refinishing or repair work on your paddle. For extensive repair/maintenance instructions, please email us at northpointpaddles@gmail.com

GENERAL MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

What You Will Need:

  •      400 grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • 2500 grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • Soft cloth for dusting off paddle after sanding
  • Soft lint-free cloth for applying teak oil (Note: If using a new cloth...before using it, we recommend washing the cloth 3 times without fabric softener to remove lint)
  • High-grade teak oil meant for marine application
  • Dry place, that is room temperature, for curing

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Lightly sand by hand with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, and then wipe down the paddle with a soft cloth to remove sanding dust.
  2. With a soft lint-free cloth, rub on a coat of high grade teak oil meant for marine application. Let air dry for 24 hours.
  3. Repeat Step 2 for the 2nd coat of teak oil. Two coats could be all you need, but you can add more if you wish – just repeat Step 2 for each coat.
  4. Once finished, allow paddle to cure in a dry place, at room temperature, approx. 5 days.
  5. After the paddle has cured, lightly sand by hand with 2500 grit wet/dry sandpaper till smooth.

YOUR NORTHPOINT PADDLE SHOULD NOW BE READY TO USE AGAIN! ENJOY!
